The Growler Headlock started life in the early 1980’s as a BMX product. There is some confusion as to who originally manufactured it, but at some point after 1988 they were being produced by Wheels Manufacturing. Whether they previously sold the product under a different name or purchased the rights to the product is unknown.
An observation we have made is that the Growler is exceptionally similar to the locknut used in the first Onza Mongo UFO headset released in 1991. Onza then used a modified version of the same locknut for the Onza Mongo II headset released in 1992. It may be possible that Onza produced their lockring under license from Wheels Manufacturing… unless they simply copied this tried and tested design.
By the early 1990’s the 6061-T6 aluminum Growler had expanded from being a Silver 1″ BMX locknut to covering the popular mountain bike headset sizes 1″, 1 1/8″ and 1 1/4″. The colours also expanded to Black, Red and Silver for 1″ and 1 1/8″ headsets and Black only for 1 1/4″.
Installation requires the replacement of your existing locknut with the Growler, then tightening the bottom nut against the Growler and securing it in place using 4mm allen key. A rubber o-ring keeps out the moisture.
